Morels: Hunting vs. Cultivating

Date April 15, 2008

In the Central Time Zone, ‘hunting’ morel mushrooms is a very serious activity. I guess if one doesn’t want to create their own little morel ‘farm’ like I do, then one must go to where the wild morel mushrooms are. Now, to me, that sounds like a lot of work.

my morel mushroomI’m surprised at how few blogs there are about morel mushroom-ing; be it hunting in the wild for the elusive fungi, or cultivating and growing your own. One of the good morel hunting blogs is the Mid Missouri blog here. I will say that finding secret stashes of morel mushrooms is probably a lot more exciting than waiting for your own to grow, plus they have nicer photographs, at least for now.

Check them out for a little more interesting reading - we don’t all have to watch the 4′x4′ morel bed…
