Early Spring ‘08 Update Morel Planting Bed
April 13, 2008
Current picture of my completed site. Click here to see the before!
Morchella angusticeps on left (fenced in), while the second bed, that of morchella esculenta, is just to the right of that (unfenced).
Winter has come and gone. Last fall I planted a second bed of morel mycelium from a different supplier, Gournet Mushrooms. This kit consists of Morchella esculenta, White Morels. Unlike the first, this brand (different species of morel?) recommends that compost and kitchen scraps be added to the morel bed periodically. I haven’t kept up that side of the bargain, so we’ll see what happens.
Still no indication (in either bed) of morel mushroom growth, at least above the ground. Most of the family is impressed that I began this project and can’t wait to see the results. I tell them that a harvest of morels this first spring/summer may or may not happen - the mycelium must grow and mature in order for fruit to grow above ground.
I also have yet to edit and post all the video footage of my morel bed construction! I’m bad, I have no excuse.
