I’m Not Cut Out For Hard Work

grow morel mushrooms like this one10/18/2007 - Yikes, I’m out of shape! Digging, pruning, hauling… but yesterday I finished the morel mushroom bed! I created the bed soil preparation, which consists of

  • wood ash,
  • peat moss,
  • top soil,
  • wallboard,
  • sand,
  • larger pieces of burnt wood.

I then mixed the mycelium mixture up with the soil mix and spread it within my 4′x4′ bed area.

I also shopped for some fencing materials to keep the pesky critters out of my morel mushroom bed. I found what I think will do the trick. 16-gauge metal fencing fabric that’s about 30 inches high. Its horizontal wire spacing is narrow at the bottom, right where hungry, curious critter paws might try to get to the ground. Towards the top of the fencing, the horizontal spacing is wider. It’s “Rabbit Fence”, good to keep hungry animals out. I also got some green metal stakes for posts. I think I’ll create four side panels and then wire them together at the grow site. Once, I used chicken wire surrounding a pumpkin grow site, but I just used one long continuous length of wire fabric and staked it into the ground here and there. I Didn’t like it. My new plan will be sturdier I think.

After that, I installed the four anti-creature fence panels around the morel mushroom bed. And, I have video of all the steps. Overall it is a simple process but it was a fair amount of labor.
